Questions & Answers

Question:

How do I get it to latch all the way? - I have installed several sections of wire trak and it won't stay latched for the entire length of the piece. Some are short (2') and others are longer (8'). How can I get the wire trak to stay latched for the entire length?

Asked by Jason T. on 06/23/2014 12:11 AM

Answer:
  • - Thank you for your question. We rarely hear of the raceways not staying latched, but some of the solutions we've encountered has been using electrical tape to keep it shut.

Stong adhesive really sticks. My issue isn't with it sticking to the painted wall, but with the paint sticking to the wall. At first it was falling off, but it was taking the paint off with it. So the adhesive definitely sticks. I found using anchor screws every 3-4 feet was all that was needed.
The forming extruder on the box works as expected and the raceway holds shape with no sagging. Did have to use a rubber hammer to snap it shut after placing wires though, and it definitely stays shut once snapped shut.
The raceway holds paint good so painting over it with wall paint makes it blend in with the wall so it's barely noticeable. The accessories, such as 90" and corner angles fit close and tight. Using this product on a curved wall is easy, but depending on the angle of the curve, the distance of a single run without a cut/break may be limited. I like the fact that going around sharp corners only requires cutting the cover. Simply scoring and vee-ing the base to make a 90 degree bend for an inside corner helps keep the raceway aligned, neat and more professional looking. If the cover is cut right in this case, you don't even need the accessory cover for the corner.
Overall I like this product, but wish they made the smaller sizes in more than 50 foot rolls. For some runs, 100 feet wasn't long enough. I'd like the option to also buy all sizes in 250 foot rolls. But overall, I will no longer buy the ridged stuff that comes in precut lengths. The roll raceway requires less joint covers, less waste (significantly less waste) and with the reduced labor cost is actually more economical to use.
My one and only complaint is that the 1 inch wide roll has two 1/4 inch adhesive strips on the back. I would prefer it to just have one 1/2 strip. Would make the peel-n-stick a bit simpler and easier.

If you're looking to run long lengths of cable with an affordable product to them, this is more or less your only choice but you should read this first. I don't write reviews, but this product needs one. When you pull it out of the box, it doesn't hook itself together. Rather, it shapes itself to roughly the shape it needs to be. You WILL have trouble getting it to snap together. Because it comes in a roll, it simply does NOT want to do that for most of the length. I was really upset at first and started TAPING it together with clear packing tape because it would not snap. Don't do this. Rather, keep mushing into shape and attempt snapping it over and over and over... it will eventually hold in place. Do NOT stick it to the wall before you get it to snap together. You will regret it. Get it to hold first, open it back up second, get your wires in it third, get it to re-snap fourth, then finally stick it to your wall. It will NOT come off your wall, can barely be repositioned, is extremely sticky and WILL pull paint off if you're not careful. If you can't follow those exact steps because of some limitation to your install, do not buy this. Seriously. Do I think you should have to do this? No. Do I think this is convinient? No. I had to run lengths of 8 feet of this stuff and getting it all to snap in place was frankly a pain. But it did eventually work, it was what I needed and it was around 50% cheaper than the alternatives. If I had read a review like this before buying this product, I would have still bought it and it would have saved me a LOT of frustration with my install. This is a functional product. Just keep all of this in mind before you buy it.

First time user and I love it!

Comments about WireTrak 375 Series Raceway On A Roll 50 Ft. - White:

Used this for the first time in my Network Installation business. Love it! The peel and stick is really strong, with only one non-product related issue. I did a 30 foot run along a painted wall about an inch down from the ceiling. Came back next day and it was off the wall and laying on top of the cabinets. Inspection revealed that it wasn't the peel & stick that had failed - it was the paint! The sticky tape is so strong that the weight of the 8 network wires in the track caused it to pull the paint off the wall when it failed. I would suggest adding screw holes about every 3 feet with the option to purchase variable lengths of flat head screws with it - both wood screws, metal screws and tapcons. Since I had mounted it on a painted concrete wall, I ended up using 2" tapcons every 3 feet. It was a chors to find beveled flathead tapcon screws too!
I'd also like to see the product upsized. I used the bisgest, 3/4" X 1 1/2" and didn't realize how thick the ABS was. I could only get about 8-10 wires inside. Any more than that, and it wouldn't snap shut unless I used a rubber hammer. While the 3/4" thickness is perfect, doubling the width and adding another peel & stick strip would have been perfect for me.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product and will continue to use it for future network installs where runs in excess of 10 feet are called for. But please! Upsize it!

Comments about WireTrak 375 Series Raceway On A Roll 50 Ft. - White:

Pulling the product out of the box at a steady slow speed helped a lot in fold consistantcy. Usually the whole piece needed to be pressed and creased just right to get the latching to work over the entire run. Cutting the pieces to length then taping them down to a straight board overnight helped a lot. Pencil mark a line and stick it down right the first time or its trouble. The sticky is really good. The white has a tint of blue in it and can be seen clearly against my eggshell white. Little paint fixed that. I 3D printed my end and corner pieces. If you can't then buy them because they are needed to look good. The track is just to tough to cut accuratly enough not to use corner and end pieces. The project looks well finished. Track holds a cat5E and (2)18ga speaker wire runs with room for a little more. I'll buy more next theater system install.

The Best Way to Buy Cable Raceways

Comments about WireTrak 375 Series Raceway On A Roll 50 Ft. - White:

I have a thing about messy electrical cords marring an otherwise picture-perfect room. But I've always hated using those ugly little clips the cable company uses when they mount wires in your home. So I was really excited to discover cable raceways. I did a lot of research on the best kind to buy, and I was surprised that only Wire Trak comes in a continuous roll. It seems like a huge waste of money and a hassle to figure out how many 5-foot lengths add up to the amount you need. This 50-foot roll is awesome. We covered every visible cable in every room of our house! I do wish I hadn't spent so much on the accessories (tees, flat elbows and inside and outside corners). We only ended up using a couple of the elbows. Also, it is pretty difficult to cut the raceways, even with a sharp box cutter. But from what I read, it creates a cleaner cut than the recommended fine-tooth saw. I love the versatility of the roll and the ability to dispense exactly the amount needed for each application. I have been recommending this product to anyone who will listen!

Nice concept, not so nice execution

Comments about WireTrak 375 Series Raceway On A Roll 50 Ft. - White:

First the positives. The adhesive on this raceway is super sticky. You're not going to have problems keeping this on. Also, there's nothing else like this out there.

Now onto my experience. At first things were fine and I was super stoked. The first 10 feet or so came out nice and straight and closed nice and easily except for where I cut but that was remedied easily. I had one problem with the adhesive sticking prematurely and I had to re-adjust it and that little piece was rendered "unsticky" but it wasn't enough to to affect the rest of the track in that section. I should have realized then and there that I was going to have problems because that was when all hell broke loose.

Not only did the raceway start coming out "crushed" so that I had to force it closed, but it also came out with a slight bend. This would not have been a big deal if the adhesive were not so ridiculously sticky. In trying to straighten out the raceway I ended up ripping the paint right off of the wall which rendered the raceway useless because hey, it's got paint chunks on it now. Mind you, I didn't even press it onto the wall. To make matters worse, on some occasions where it did manage to catch a surface but not fully adhere the tape decided it didn't want to stick to anything else anymore anyway. So either get it on right the first time or get really lucky or bye-bye to a chunk of the raceway.

The icing on the cake was that at some point the raceway started coming out with red stains which I guess come from rubbing on the outlet. I wasn't planning on painting it, but I HAVE to paint now anyway so I'll have to put more effort into that now too.

All in all, not too positive and way more trouble than it was worth. This product would be infinitely better if it used some sort of two part system like a loop and latch/industrial velcro system so that you could easily remedy the things that are inevitably going to go wrong. Maybe I got a bad batch, I don't know considering that I seem to have had the worst experience of all the reviews listed. Just be aware that this could end up turning into a much bigger project than what you initially expect.

Just installed it today, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was and how good it looks. The raceway comes out of the box pre-shaped, and the bottom latches are secure. I placed it right against the ceiling, and it was still easy to latch. The only major test will be whether the adhesive lasts for the years to come.
