Installing a Cable-Safe™

Top 5 Things to Keep in Mind

Cable-Safe assembled

Well, I finally did it. I rolled up my sleeves, crawled under my desk, and got down to the business of installing my brand new Cable-Safe™. An hour ago, all of my computer and phone-related cables were lying on the floor in a tangled web, just waiting to snare any unsuspecting foot venturing more than halfway under the desk. But since the Cable-Safe™ arrived on the scene, there’s been an amazing transformation!

Now, instead of a chaotic snake pit of cords, there’s nothing on the floor under my desk…except for the carpet, that is. The Cable-Safe™ allowed me to organize and lift all my renegade cords off the floor. My under-desk floor space has been transformed into a neat, orderly and professional-looking world, where my feet are free to roam wherever they want to!

The Cable-Safe™ is a terrific and well-thought-out product, but unfortunately that doesn’t change the fact that those of us who install Cable-Safes™ are only human! I highly recommend that you give the Cable-Safe™ a try, but before you do, read on and learn from my blunders. In the end, you’ll have a great cable management system in place, and your installation will have been frustration free! Based on my experience, here are 5 not-so-obvious (but important) things to remember when it’s Cable-Safe™ installation time:

parts of Cable Safe
  • Check it out: The easiest (and wisest) way to start your project is to completely unpack your Cable-Safe™ kit and have a look through all the components in the box. The Cable-Safe™ Complete Cable Manager Kit comes with everything you could possibly need for installation, and some of these parts are optional, so it’s good to know exactly what you’re dealing with before you start putting pieces together.
  • Read up ahead of time: The whole key to a quick and frustration-free Cable-Safe™ installation can be summed up in three words: read the instructions! Installing a Cable-Safe™ is very easy, but it’s not the kind of project that the average person can just feel their way through, so make sure to read the directions before your project is already under way! Trust me…the entire process will make a lot more sense, especially if you’ve already acquainted yourself with all the Cable-Safe™ components.
  • Consider your power supply: The whole point of putting in a Cable-Safe™ is to lift both cables and your power supply off the floor. This said, it’s very important to keep in mind that this particular product is intended for use with svelte power strips, not chunky battery-backup units! If there’s one thing that will foil an entire Cable-Safe™ installation, it’s realizing halfway into the project that the design of your power supply unit isn’t compatible with the cable manager. I would know… I had to stop mid-installation to swap out my heavy, block-style power supply for a slim and lightweight power strip that could actually be mounted onto the Cable-Safe™. After I made the switch, though, everything was smooth sailing.
Cable-Safe before and after
  • Label those cables: Alright, it’s confession time. I have to admit that the combination of lack-of-time and laziness would usually cause me to “overlook” the enclosed cord labels and skip the labeling step altogether. Fortunately, the Cable-Safe™ folks know a thing or two about snazzy label design: with all the funky colors and borders, I was so charmed by the self-stick labels that I couldn’t resist using them! Now all of my cables (and ports!) are labeled, and there’s no question about which devices the cords go to, or where each one needs to plug in. The IT guys in my office are cheering over that one: the next time I need to move my computer, I’ll actually be able to hook it up again… without begging them for help!
  • Change into long pants: No, that’s not a joke, just sage advice from a rug-burned writer who showed up to work in cropped pants and sandals, and then got into uncomfortably close contact with commercial-grade carpet while installing a Cable-Safe™! Let me clarify: it’s not Cable-Safe™, but the lack of planning that equals rug-burn in situations like this. So take it from someone who learned the hard way, and change into a pair of jeans and some socks before you get started… your knees and ankles will thank you for it!
