What is the difference between tapped & cage nut rails?
Tapped rails have had a secondary process done to them. During this manufacturing step a special tapping drill cuts threads into the 19? rack mount portion of the rails. An advantage of tapped rails is that you can start installing equipment right after you have unpacked your enclosure. Tapped rails are generally preferred in network/telecommunication enclosures due to installation being a complete breeze. Enclosures that require the installation of SERVERS from the major server manufacturers should not use tapped rails. Server installation kits supplied by the server manufacturers almost always require cage nut rails. Cage Nut rails, also known as Universal or M6 Rails, use Metric 6 cage nuts. These rails allow you to mount network & telecommunication equipment and are a requirement by most major server enclosure manufacturers for installing their equipment. Always check with the server manufacturer for mounting requirements.
