There isn’t one set way to manage computer cables. While any computer cable management project has the ultimate goal of creating a more organized and efficient workspace, there are many different options based on your specific computer setup, desk type, and budget. Here’s a list of a few of our favorite computer cable managers and how they work:

• Wire Loom is a type of flexible plastic tubing that’s used to bundle cables together and protect them from abrasion, and is one of the least expensive cable management options on the market. It’s designed with a slit along its length, which allows you to easily insert and remove cables as needed. • Braided Sleeving, like wire loom, is a flexible, tube-like product that’s woven from thin filaments of polymer, metal or high-performance specialty fibers like Teflon and Kevlar. For computer cable management, you’d most likely use basic PET braided sleeving, which is inexpensive and available in many different colors and sizes. Braided sleeving expands so it can be pulled over cables, and once it’s in place, it contracts to form a snug but extremely flexible fit around cable bundles, and has a smooth, low profile, fabric-like appearance. Some braided sleevings are also available in a wrap-around style, which works well with computer wiring and other cables that can’t be disconnected.

• Grommets allow you to route computer, USB and phone wires directly through cutouts in your desktop, which helps to keep your workspace free of loose cable clutter. Grommets are primarily used to line pre-existing holes or retrofit cutouts in order to protect cables from sharp or jagged edges, but many grommets have additional features that let you adjust the size of the cable pass-through, route cables in the directions they need to go when they reach your desktop, and prevent unplugged computer cables from falling back through the grommet and onto the floor.
