Whats the best way to manage computer cables?

There isn’t one set way to manage computer cables. While any computer cable management project has the ultimate goal of creating a more organized and efficient workspace, there are many different options based on your specific computer setup, desk type, and budget. Here’s a list of a few of our favorite computer cable managers and how they work:

  • Wire Loom is a type of flexible plastic tubing that’s used to bundle cables together and protect them from abrasion, and is one of the least expensive cable management options on the market. It’s designed with a slit along its length, which allows you to easily insert and remove cables as needed. Wire loom comes in basic black and neutrals to match conservative office décor, but is also available in a variety of bright colors, and even a chrome finish, for people who want to organize cables while injecting a little style and personality into their workspaces.
  • Braided Sleeving, like wire loom, is a flexible, tube-like product that’s woven from thin filaments of polymer, metal or high-performance specialty fibers like Teflon and Kevlar. For computer cable management, you’d most likely use basic PET braided sleeving, which is inexpensive and available in many different colors and sizes. Braided sleeving expands so it can be pulled over cables, and once it’s in place, it contracts to form a snug but extremely flexible fit around cable bundles, and has a smooth, low profile, fabric-like appearance. Some braided sleevings are also available in a wrap-around style, which works well with computer wiring and other cables that can’t be disconnected.
  • Grommets allow you to route computer, USB and phone wires directly through cutouts in your desktop, which helps to keep your workspace free of loose cable clutter. Grommets are primarily used to line pre-existing holes or retrofit cutouts in order to protect cables from sharp or jagged edges, but many grommets have additional features that let you adjust the size of the cable pass-through, route cables in the directions they need to go when they reach your desktop, and prevent unplugged computer cables from falling back through the grommet and onto the floor.
  • J-Channel Raceway is a type of wire channel that’s enclosed on about 3-1/2 of its 4 sides, creating a J-shaped, conduit-like cord organizer that fully contains any computer cables you hide in it, yet also has a convenient opening to enable easy cable additions or removals anywhere along its length. J-Channel is perfect for use along the back of desks and other office furniture, and can also be run around the inner perimeter of a cubicle workstation to route cords as they run between devices and power outlets or data ports.
  • The Self-Adjusting Computer Cable Organizer is perfect for the type of person who wants to keep desk cables in line without completely bundling or concealing every cable on and around their workspace. Designed to attach the back of a desk, directly behind a computer, this self-adjusting organizer is made up of a row of flexible plastic fingers, which gently separate and direct cables as they travel between your desktop PC and power/data outlets on the wall or floor.
  • The Cable-Safe™ Complete Cable Manager is a rack-like system that can either be installed onto the wall behind your desk, or suspended below your desktop. Designed with a combination of hooks and mini shelves, the Cable-Safe™ gives you a place to hang coiled-up excess cable length and mount power strips and small peripherals off the floor and away from your feet.
  • The Cable Corral Under-Desk Wire Tray is a wire rack that’s installed just under your desktop to neatly hold and organize excess cable length, USB hubs, power strips, and anything else that’s causing unwanted clutter on the floor beneath your desk. The Cable Corral has a flexible design that lets you simply pile things into it, or precisely organize and configure each cable and device. Either way you use it, the area beneath your desk will be clean and free from cable-related clutter.
